Welcome to the Musings of a Proud Canadian!

September 29, 2008

This blog is about anything Canadian with a focus on good news stories. I am a proud Canadian and I want people who read my blog to be as proud a Canadian as I am and to appreciate the great country they live in. It doesn’t get any better than Canada

  1. Hi! I love the idea of the Site! Here’s a question for ya, and I’m not sure if there is an answer (or at least a universal one)…
What does it mean to be “Canadian”? Or what sets us Canadians apart from everyone else in the world, who probably want to emulate the amazingness that is us? Is a person who was born here more Canadian than an immigrant? Is knowing our second national language, French, a prerequisite to an authentic Canada tag?
There is never a concrete answer. What do you think?

  2. Excellent question and I am sure there are many good answers. I think the first thing that comes to mind is our values as a country. We believe in freedom and democracy and fairness to all. We are a caring people, we believe in helping our neighbors. For example, we provide universal health care at a great cost because we are concerned for those that are less fortunate than us. We support equality and diversity. We love hockey lol.

Is a person who was born here more Canadian than an immigrant? Tough one. If one comes in the middle of their life from a country with different values, one might logically think they would not automatically make the transition just because they become a Canadian. Logically, a person who was born here and grew up indoctrined to our value system would on the surface, seem to have a better take on being Canadian but, that is not a given. A two year immigrant may be just as much a Canadian as a lifelong Canadian.

Regardless, I think what immigrants have brought to this country over the years is all part of the Canadian look and feel. After all, at one time we were all immigrants.

    Thanks for your thoughts.
